The County Attorney is the People's lawyer, a non-partisan public servant who represents county government and leads as the chief prosecutor for all felony and juvenile crime in the county.
What experience and skill does Anoka County value in its chief prosecutor? To be an effective leader and policymaker, the County Attorney must have current criminal law experience and be on top of evolving trends in crime and criminal justice policy. Brad is a tough prosecutor and the only candidate running for Anoka County Attorney with any significant criminal law experience in well over the past two decades.
In fact, Brad has a winning record as a prosecutor. His opponent, on the other hand, has only tried one criminal jury trial in the past 25 years; it was a short 4 day trial of an alleged sex offender, 17 years ago, and he lost with a NOT GUILTY verdict. And earlier this year, he lost another trial for Anoka County in a lawsuit brought by the City of East Bethel to block the county housing and redevelopment authority's efforts to impose a double tax.
Brad is the only real trial lawyer running to be County Attorney. Here is what a district court judge wrote about Brad following a three-week public corruption trial in 2008:
“I simply want to say that Brad Johnson gave one of the finest closing arguments I’ve seen in my hundreds of criminal trials as a judge. He took a complicated case involving detailed business records, difficult and not always helpful testimony from a great many witnesses, and wove together all of the strands of the case in a way that was masterful, riveting, eloquent, and brilliant.”
Brad Johnson has the experience and skills to lead as Anoka’s next chief prosecutor.
Public Safety First. Brad fights for justice every day as a lead prosecutor in the complex crimes unit of Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, where he has first-hand experience in difficult criminal cases including identity theft, mortgage fraud, public corruption and the exploitation of the vulnerable and elderly. Earlier in his career, Brad prosecuted domestic abusers, sex offenders, assaults, and juvenile delinquency cases. Anoka County needs Brad’s leadership as a prosecutor; public safety will be his first priority.
Well Rounded. Before he was a prosecutor, Brad practiced law for a decade at two national law firms—one in Minneapolis and another in North Carolina. Brad brings a perspective from outside Anoka’s local government, and he knows from the private sector how to work within a budget to deliver excellent legal services by leveraging talent and technology and increasing efficiencies.
Paying forward. Brad’s hometown education in Anoka earned him a Presidential Scholarship at Montana State University where he graduated with Highest Honors, and then a law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and third in his class. Brad’s successes as a private lawyer and later as a prosecutor are rooted in lessons learned in Anoka. With a solid background, Brad will provide the leadership we need for Anoka County’s future.
Brad will use his experience and skills to keep Anoka County safe and its future bright. Join in supporting Brad Johnson for Anoka County Attorney.
